Washington State Alliance Calls on Candidates to take the pledge
The Interfaith Alliance of Washington State called on candidates in local school-board
races to reject "religious extremism" and to conduct their campaigns in a way consistent
with the "basic principles of fairness and decency." Candidates were asked to sign a
pledge in which they committed themselves to the following:
an affirmation of the religious diversity of the country.
the rejection of any political group preaching or practicing exclusion and intolerance.
the rejection of any appeal to prejudice or discrimination.
the refusal to accept support or contributions from individuals or groups appealing to
prejudice or discrimination.
the avoidance of unfair campaign practices.
the right of every qualified U.S. citizen to participate fully and equally in the electoral
process.
Along with copies of the pledge, questionnaires were also sent to school-board candidates.
These questionnaires sought to determine the candidates' positions on such issues as
school prayer, the use of tax dollars for private schools, and the teaching of creationism in
science classes.
Results were then compiled and made public prior to the election.
