Ethiopia
October-November of 2002, I went to central Ethiopia to scout and
permission for the Ethiopia-Afar Geologic-Lithospheric Experiment (EAGLE).
In one month I visited 15 governmental offices, 250 farmers, 4 state farms,
2 military bases, 4 timber projects, 8 hotels, rebuilt an old carbeurator,
ran out of benzene(gas), procured malaria for my local guide, lounged in the
hot springs, and drove about 6000 kilometers of truly challenging roads.
Ethiopia is a nice green place on the norm. When they get enough rain,
the country feeds most of northern Africa. They have no storage capacity
though, so when there is a shortfall, people don't have enough food.
