Shot generated and ambient noise are often undersampled on
land data. In addition, survey acquisition geometry and the earth's
vertical and lateral heterogeniety can lead to significant deviations of
time, waveform and amplitude away from expected subsurface reflectivity.
A non-linear, frequency dependent, "true relative" amplitude noise
suppression technique that employs earth velocity and reflectivity
information has been developed and used to suppress the effects of both
aliased noise as well as other amplitude distortions. In combination
with other processing techniques, higher signal to noise ratio amplitude
attributes can be generated. But quantitatively reliable AVO information
remains an elusive goal.
