Virginia Peak at sunrise from our campsite on the eastern shore of Return Lake. Notice the dark red intrusion in the center of the peak? I'm not certain (geologist please set me straight: e-mail), but I believe the red portion is a "roof pendant", or small rafts of resistant meta-sedimentary rocks which once floated on top of the molten Sierra Nevada batholith.
