The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails

By R.J. Secor. The High Sierra hiking/climbing guidebook. Amazingly exhaustive. An indispensible trip planning aid.

On May 24-25, 2003, Kim, myself, Kim's friend Hari, and Hari's friend Kayo camped on the summit of Smith Peak (~7800'), which is a local highpoint in the Hetch Hetchy region of Yosemite NP. Tioga Road being closed at this time, we figured that the hike would be the perfect alternative to Yosemite Valley hell on Memorial Day. From the Mather Ranger Station, the trail to the summit climbs roughly 3300 feet over nearly 8 miles, with the bulk of the mileage passing through recently burned forests.

We took a leisurely pace and arrived on the summit around 19:00. Views from Smith Peak's summit were astounding, and the campsite perfect. We could see deep into many important ranges: Matterhorn Peak, Mount Conness, and Mount Clark, to name a few. A consolidated snowfield blanketed Smith Peak's north slopes, providing an easy alternative to wading through manzanita hell, and also a readily available water supply for cooking and cleaning.

After a windless, warm night on the summit, we humped it down to the Dimond-O campground, where the three women stayed the next night while I headed back to Palo Alto.
