My comical solo overnight trip to the Mono Pass area in August, 1998 was my first
solo trip, first in a very long time, and first since arriving in grad school.
I had some vague plans to camp somewhere high, like Koip Peak Pass. To make a
long story short, I got lost long before the pass and ended up spending a long
and windy night at Helen Lake (illegally, I might add). Though I had no stove and
no cookable food, my REI metal frame pack must have weighed 50 pounds, packed with
a tent, sleeping back, therm-a-rest, (unused) flyfishing gear, and to top it off,
a very heavy flourescent Coleman lantern!
