About 2-3 miles from the end of Chain of Craters Road, lava is currently (early 2003) flowing into the ocean. Not many people make the hike down to a point closer to the flow, and the NPS discourages it, due to possibly hazardous gas byproducts of the reaction. If you go down there, bring your tripod and a good flashlight to get back.
