Annotated panoramic view of the passes leading from Spring Lake over the Great Western Divide.
"Hands-and-Knees Pass" (a.k.a. "Cyclamen Lake Pass"), although derided by RJ Secor, is
actually the more direct route. It is steep, but direct, and there are only a couple
class 3 moves near the top. Secor's mistake was to descend to Hands-and-Knees from
Cyclamen Lake, which involves traversing steep, talus-covered slabs.
Black Rock Pass has an actual trail, but the cross-country portion from Spring Lake is fairly tedious, and the route is about 50% longer than the route over Hands-and-Knees. |
