I Just Couldn't Find Anywhere Else for These Things

I'll be honest with you folks. I come across many interesting sites and documents in my web travels that just don't fit anywhere. A better title for this section would have been "sausage", but "Thought and Commentary" sounded more ... literary. So, forgive me if the organization on this page isn't the hyper-retentive categorization that you've come to expect from your humble webmaster, but hey, we all slip from time to time, right?

Not much of an introduction, I realize. Don't let my caveats dissuade you; some of the links on this page are among the best you'll find on the site, it's just that they're somewhat disheveled.

      Stats and Such
The Diminishing Divide: American Churches, American Politics
This survey, done for the Pew Center for People and the Press in the Summer of '96 is an excellent source of statistics regarding the influence of faith in American politics. A must for anyone not already familiar with America's religious geography.

    The Naked Public Square

Progressives readily admit that there is less overt religious presence in the national 'public square' than there has been historically, but deny that the extent is as dramatic as conservatives assert. Progressives also point out that in a diverse society, it is bigotry to expect our nation to continue to reflect the same religious values that it has for the first part of its history.

      Mammoth Political Sites
For those of you not really interested in any of this "religious" stuff; for those of you who take their politics straight up; for those of you who relish being called a "partisan"; I yield to you perhaps the two best political sites on the web:
          Turn Left
The Right Side of the Web

      Misc. Hatreds
Some visitors have asked why I don't have more links to militia groups and the like from this site. The answer is that those groups don't play a significant role in the political or cultural resolution of the issues discussed on these pages. In the interests of information, however, I will put sites in this section that represent the extremes of either side. There appears to be plenty of hatred to go around. Let me make explicit that, as for all the links on "Culture Wars 101", I do not condone or condemn any pages to which I link. And the last caveat - I'm not saying that each of these groups are commensurate in their hatreds; just that they've each got quite an ax to grind. More to come, I suppose.

Dominion Theology: The Truth About the Christian Right's Bid for Power (Z Magazine)
        With God On Our Side
This incredible PBS mini series was lauded by those on all sides of these issues for both its objectivity and its scope. When was the last time anything aired by PBS was previewed at the Christian Coalition's Road to Victory rally?
