Hanna and Kai at Kalama Park, March 2001

A little story by Grandpa

In March 2001 I made a 10 day trip to Maui. Unfortunately I was not able to see Hanna very much. Her mother did not feel well.

One day, however, I was at Kalama Park and Kai found me and took me to his mother Kaiko and Hanna who were also at the park.

Kai and I invented a game. First I took a blade of grass and pulled it very tight and straight between my two hands. Then I held it between my lips and blew. It made a noise like an angry bird. Kai invented the game to go with the noise. He would lie down on the bench in front of me and I would blow the angry bird noise by his feet. Then Kai would jump up and run away. Soon Hanna joined in the game.

Kaiko translated that Hanna told me that some little animals lived inside the stone wall of the park. Hanna showed me where people had written their names in the cement. I told her the sound of each letter in the names.

The last day I was in Maui I saw Hanna again for a short time. I came to her house. Martin pushed her very high on the swing. I was frightened but Hanna was not. Then Martin took her inside to wash her feet.
