Some years ago, Shuki Ronen and I proposed a formalization of the
statics corrections process as ``maximize the power in the stack''.
With MOPLAN filters, a new formalization of the statics problem
is possible, ``minimize the power in the mono-plane-annihilated stack''.
Unlike the statics concept with Ronen, this new MOPLAN concept
is an instance of ``geophysical inverse theory'' where
the model covariance matrix is identified as a MOPLAN.
Ronen and I discovered,
when we dug inside the statics programs,
that our principle implied techniques
that were practically the same as the traditional ones.
It will be interesting to see what is implied by MOPLAN statics.
A data type that might validate MOPLAN statics
would be where near-surface corrections and variable
dip are important, but curvature is not
(so migration is not also involved).
Later we will see that
an important MOPLAN simultaneously incorporates deconvolution.
