Using a discrete physical system as a guide for discretizing the
wave equation, I have derived an alternative 2-D transverse-isotropic
modeling scheme that might provide more accurate wavefield
simulations for blocky-like models than the usual stress-strain
methods. This scheme uses
equivalent medium theory to construct a bridge between differential
and difference equations. The method was implemented
efficiently in a parallel architecture using spatial differential
operators of different orders depending on whether they are applied to
wavefields or elastic parameters. Two examples show the results of the
application of this modeling scheme to physical models with distinct
characteristics. These results illustrate the stability and accuracy
of the method.
