In November, 1998, I took an overnight trip with Antoine Guitton and Olivier Meynier around what
I dub the "North Dome Loop". In the winter, Tioga Road is closed, and along with it the easiest
access point to North Dome, the Porcupine Flat Trailhead. However, this fact greatly whittles
down the crowds. We hiked up the Yosemite Falls trail, traversed the valley rim, and camped on
the dome just west of North Dome. The views of Half Dome are unforgettable! The next day, on the
heels of a strong winter storm, we hiked down the Snow Creek Trail on a long 14-mile day, arriving
back to the Valley just as the rain (snow higher) started in earnest.
You can find a trip report of our Thanksgiving adventure to
North Dome here.
