Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook

By Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. Excellent guidebook. Much better than the Lonely Planet series, since it gives opinions. Good, detailed information for hiking and snorkeling.

Polulu Valley, on the North Kohala coast of the Big Island, is the westermost of the major north-south valleys carved by heavy rainfall into the northern slopes of 5505-foot Kohala Volcano. Waipi'o Valley is the easternmost, and more impressive than Polulu Valley. To get to Polulu Valley, drive to the end of Highway 270, about five miles past the town of Hawi. Park in the tiny lot, or more likely, along the road. Hike down the obvious trail, descending 500 feet or so to a (mostly) black sand beach. Take in beautiful views of the valley proper and of the rugged North Kohala coastline along the way. The surf is pretty intense, so be careful when swimming casually. There appears to be good surfing here.

Kim and I enjoyed Polulu Valley as the cap on a morning tour of the Kohala coast on 26 March 2003, before heading to Kahalu'u Beach Park for a second snorkeling experience.
