Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
By Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. Excellent guidebook. Much better than the Lonely Planet series, since it gives opinions. Good, detailed information for hiking and snorkeling.

Kohala is the Big Island's oldest and lowest (5505') distinct volcano summit. Once an active shield volcano like Kilaueau, today it is a broad, forested ridgeline, interrupted by a few cinder cones, products of the last sputterings of the mountain. Frequent rainfall on the north side of the mountain scours a series of great valleys, all of which rival places like Yosemite Valley in steepness and depth.

Kohala Mountain road scenically connects the hub city of Waimea with the north Kohala Coast town of Hawi. From the road's crest near 4000 feet in elevation, views toward Haleakala, Maui's highest peak at over 10000 feet becomes visible.

On 23 March 2003, Kim and I hiked around the southeast side of Kohala Mountain to the north-facing headwall most famous of the North Kohala valleys, Waipi'o Valley. On 25 March, we drove from Kona to Hawi, where we enjoyed lunch at Bamboo restaurant and ice cream at Tropical Delights, then on to Polulu Valley.
