Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
By Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. Excellent guidebook. Much better than the Lonely Planet series, since it gives opinions. Good, detailed information for hiking and snorkeling.

Kahalu'u Beach is undoubtedly the most popular snorkeling spot on the Big Island. And for good reason, as our guidebook, Hawaii: the Big Island Revealed notes, the area is "teaming with fish and offers more variety of sea life than any other easily accessible spot in Kona."

The well-marked beach is located about 5 miles south of downtown Kona on Ali'i Drive. It opens at 7 a.m., and arriving early makes the experience far more enjoyable, as the parking lot normally fills by 9 a.m. and the water seems to become more cloudy as the day progresses. The water is irritatingly shallow, and a strong current makes it difficult to stay in one place.
