In preparation for our climb of Mauna Kea, Kim and I took a recommendable (and little-known) drive up Kaloko Drive, which climbs to nearly 5000 feet elevation, below Ka'upuhelu Crater. Parking at the 4200-foot level, we jogged a couple miles to the road's highpoint to acclimate to the much-higher elevations of Mauna Kea.

Hualalai's summit was never visible from the Kona area until the last full day of our vacation. Kim snapped a few photos of the (usually) sleeping giant from the moving car window on the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (11).
