Hawaii the Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
By Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. Excellent guidebook. Much better than the Lonely Planet series, since it gives opinions. Good, detailed information for hiking and snorkeling.

On 24 March, 2003 we visited (on Jon Claerbout's recommendation) Honomalino Beach, roughly 30 miles south of Kona, near the town of Milol'i. After hiking through choked scrubland for twenty minutes and passing about as many "Kapu: No Tresspassing" signs, you reach a truly fantastic (mostly) black sand beach. The seclusion of the place makes it a welcome destination for those (like myself) who tire easily of tourist crowds. While the snorkeling isn't the best on the island (it's still good), the bay offers about a mile of fine swimming.
