The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails

By R.J. Secor. The High Sierra hiking/climbing guidebook. Amazingly exhaustive. An indispensible trip planning aid.

On October 29, 2001, the day before the season's first snowfall, and the day after daylight savings time went away, we dayhiked Alta Peak from Wolverton. It's a nice, strenuous, but straightforward dayhike, with 4200 feet of elevation gain over about 14 miles. The views from the top are stupendous on a clear day, extending over innumerable peaks to the east, and some great canyon views on the west. Trip Report is here
