The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails - by R.J. Secor. Unquestionably the bible of California backcountry adventure. Reliable and exhaustive, which is no small feat, given the scale of the "Range of Light".

Little Baldy is nothing more than a bald nub, hardly noticeable from any surrounding points. From the summit however, the view is nothing but big! A 270-degree panoramic view of Silliman Crest, the Great Western Divide, and down into Kaweah Canyon. And the cost to you is a mere 3.4 mile walk with 900 feet of climbing. If you are visiting Lodgepole for the day in the summer, I recommend doing two things: in the morning climb Little Baldy; in the afternoon heat, check out the big trees.

To get to the trailhead, go west from Lodgepole on Highway 180 (Generals Highway). After approximately five miles, you will pass Dorst Campground on the left. Little Baldy trailhead sneaks up on you about a mile later, on the right. Parking may be limited, so like I said, do this one in the morning.

Kim and I did this one on a beautiful January day. Snow that year was light until mid-January, so we encountered none on the trail, save some nasty ice on the steeper sections. You may want to bring crampons, or better, some of the little slip-on traction-helpers (check REI), for these conditions. Trail conditions are dicier after lots of snow has fallen, though you should be able to follow it.
