Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies
By Kathy Copeland. Very nice guidebook. Opinionated is good! We followed the suggestions for our dayhikes and were not disappointed.

Definitely the shortest hike of the trip. We drove down the mind-blowing Maligne River Valley, eventually catching the trailhead for Bald Hills at Maligne Lake. This is the starting point for the incredibly popular Skyline backpacking trip, which traverses the long range of mountains separating the valleys of the Maligne and Athabasca Rivers, staying above treeline much of the way.

Tempertures were damp and fairly chilly when we started around 11 am; maybe 50 degrees fahrenheit. We started right up -- you guessed it -- a bald hill, and soon began to get great views of Maligne Lake and the high peaks ringing it on two sides. After we'd gained around 1500 feet, we saw weather approaching fast from the west. The wind picked up, and before we knew it, it was snowing -- hard!

We were dressed for the weather, but decided to head for the car, which we reached soon after noon. Kim showed brilliance in suggesting that we drive to a hot springs for a little afternoon soak. 104 degrees felt awfully nice!
