An Inversion Method for Acoustic Wave Fields , by Robert W. Clayton and Robert H Stolt

A method is derived for determining density and bulk-modulus variations in the earth form standard reflection surveys. Explicit formulas are given for the variations that utilize the amplitude information present in the observed wave fields. The method is based on a Born approximation of the scattering equation, and is consequently restricted to sub-critical reflec- tions. The computations are done in the Fourier domain, where the first part of the algorithm is very similar to an F-K migration. The computational expense of the method is only slighty greater than that of F-K migration itself.
