GEOMETRICAL OPTICS AND WAVE THEORY OF CONSTANT OFFSET SECTIONS IN LAYERED MEDIA , by Swavek M. Deregowski and Fabio Rocca

The theory of constant offset sections discussed in this paper allows them to be mapped to a fixed offset and compared in order to provide a method of velocity analysis. The mapping to zero offset might provide an alternative processing procedure to NMO and stack. Regretably, the theory does not provide exact solutions in closed form. Two alternative sets of approximate expressions for the frequency/wavenumber migration of constant offset sections are derived for layered media. These are the low offset approximation valid for all angles of propagation and the 15 degree approximation valid for all offsets. The angular amplitude variation for a migration operator is also derived from the double square root equation.
