Checklist

• Build node.
• Remove orders about floppy drives.
• Install Redhat 7.2.
• Get ethernet hardware address and give to Bob.
• Turn off Xconsole login.
• Create new account for "testing".
• Install telnet and rsh.
• Allow hosts 192.168.0.249 and 192.168.0.248.
• Turn off firewall.
• Allow root to log in from other machines.
• Allow all users to log in from other machines without re-entering password.
• Move /usr/local to /usr/local_init.

Explanation

• Build node.
  • Install motherboard, cdrom drive (slave) and hard drive (master) in case.
  • Install processors and memory.
  • Remove jumpers from JP4 and JP5.
  • Wire case to motherboard, IDE ribbon to hard drive and cdrom.
  • Attach power supply to motherboard, cdrom and hard drive.
  • Install video card.
• Remove orders about floppy drives.
  • When machine first comes up, go into Setup mode by hitting the Del key.
  • Change Drive A to NONE.
  • Go to boot.
  • Change 1st boot device to CDROM.
  • Change 2nd boot device to HDD-0.
  • Make sure none of the boot devices are floppies!
• Install Redhat 7.2. Ask Marie or Bob about root password.
  • Put the Rehat Install disk in.
  • Just hit the "next" button for everything EXCEPT:
    • When given the choice of how to partition the disk, choose Disk Druid.
    • Partition the disk as follows:
      • /boot : 128 Mb
      • / : 800 Mb
      • /usr : 1800 Mb
      • /var : 256 Mb
      • change filesystem to swap : 2047 Mb
      • /scr1 : fill (there is an option to fill the remaining disk with this partition)
    • Change the boot loader from GRUB to LILO
    • Skip boot disk creation.
• Get ethernet hardware address and give to Bob.
  • Log in as root.
  • Type this on the command line: dmesg > aa.txt
  • vi aa.txt and search for the string "eth"
  • Copy down the 12 character sequence.
• Turn off Xconsole login.
  • vi /etc/inittab and search for initdefault
  • Change the 5 in that line to 3.
• Create new account for "testing".
  • adduser testing
  • passwd testing and give testing the password Bob or Marie tells you.
• Install telnet and rsh.
  • Insert CD1 of the Redhat Install software.
  • Mount the cdrom.
  • cd /mnt/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS/
  • rpm -i rsh-server....
  • rpm -i telnet-ser....
  • cd /etc/xinetd.d
  • vi rsh rlogin telnet
  • In each file find the line that says disable=yes and change it to disable=no.
• Allow hosts 192.168.0.249 and 192.168.0.248.
  • vi /etc/hosts.allow
  • Add these lines:
    • ALL: 192.168.0.249
    • ALL: 192.168.0.248
• Turn off firewall.
  • /sbin/chkconfig --level 35 ipchains off
  • /etc/rc.d/init.d/ipchains off
• Allow root to log in from other machines.
  • vi /etc/securetty
  • Add two lines to the bottom of the file:
    • rsh
    • rlogin
• Allow all users to log in from other machines without re-entering password.
  • vi /etc/hosts.equiv
  • Insert two lines:
    • okok-cluster
    • sep001
  • vi /etc/hosts
  • Add this line: 192.168.0.249 okok-cluster.Stanford.EDU
  • cd /etc/pam.d
  • vi rlogin
  • Find this line: auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so
  • Add this to the end of it: hosts_equiv_rootok promiscuous
  • vi rsh
  • Find this line: auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so
  • Change sufficient to required and add this to the end: hosts_equiv_rootok promiscuous
• Move /usr/local to /usr/local_init.
  • mv /usr/local /usr/local_init
