Vicinity map | Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, CO
15 x 15 minute composite map of the Black Canyon National Park region,
Colorado, USA. From the National Park Service's
BCNP page:
| The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's unique and spectacular landscape was formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This region is "mesa country". Geologically speaking, a "horst and graben" normal-faulted environment, where the mesas are uplifted blocks and most valleys downridden. What's interesting here is that the canyon is situated in the middle of a mesa! The river was apparently emplaced before uplift began, and the rate of erosion was able to keep up with the uplift. What you have today is an incredibly sheer canyon of almost 1000m depth.

| Vicinity map Death Valley
| 7.5 x 30 minute composite map of Telescope Peak (3368m) and Badwater Basin (-86m)
area of Death Valley NP, CA. Over roughly 15km, the elevation change is nearly 3500m,
making an average grade of 23%! I've never visited this desolate region, but
I'm sure it's spectacular.
