This web page presents my thoughts on the software
I use in my research. It is mostly concerned about
the tools that build my virtual laboratory.
Some of these documents are unfinished drafts ...
- Java movie display for 3-D seismic data

is an interactive viewing program.
The implementation is ight-weight and easily extendible.
It should run on any Java platform (including your favorite
browser) with Java 4.1 or higher.
- Reproducible documents for the Internet
(html,
ps)
are the essence of a virtual laboratory.
The electronic document integrates a scientist's
explainations,
images, and
programs necessary to compute the results.
When offered on the Internet using Java programs,
reproducible documents communicate not only the ideas and concept
of the author, but all implementation details.
Additionally, reproducible documents help the authors maintain their work.
- Reproducible documents for UNIX systems

ps)
is a mature and tried implementation research publication system
at my laboratory (SEP).
The UNIX system is extremly flexible and is not limited to a
particular programming language.
- Future
(html,
ps)
developments will hopefully make the virtual laboratory common place.
The reproducible electronic document will become fully functional
as web documents.
Scientists will be able to integrate
their file system,
their publications and software, and
the world wide web.
I hope standardization and object-orientation will enable us to share
improved tools, such as editors or a Make dependency tool.

is my favorite operating system for researcher
in computational sciences.

- Latex2e

ps)
is my word processing tool of choice.
Its capabilities to create mathematical expressions is unsurpassed.
Latex and Tex are the standard for people expressing math.
Sergey Fomel did most of the work introducing Latex2e at SEP.
Martin Karrenbach integrated Latex, and cake.
We use Latex2html to convert our Latex documents to HTML documents.
Unfortunately, the results are not perfect, but acceptable.
XML might be an alternative.
- Web design

includes my musings and advice for the design of
fast, functional, and fat web pages.

was designed along these criteria.
- Software distribution on the Web

describes the work Joel Schroeder and I did to make SEP software
