CONCLUSION

I have presented an insight in the Engquist-Osher minimization scheme used in Van Trier's finite-difference traveltime calculations. I explained the approximations made by the scheme and the probable source of numerical instability. I extended Van Trier's algorithm to the 3-D case and showed examples of finite-difference traveltime maps for 3-D models with constant velocity and relatively mild variations in velocity.
