ABSTRACT

I am writing a new textbook (and revising an old one) that will appear in electronic form as well as paper form. On the workstation screen appear pages with pasted-in figures and push buttons in the figure captions. A pushbutton takes you to a directory where the figure gets made. From there, some figures spring up into interactive programs and others into batch programs. Reading is simplest when remote sites use networks and X to read my Stanford copy of the book. I am also attempting to distribute the book on tape but the main drawback there is the volume of complicated software required to be installed, including cake, ratfor, seplib, vplot, TEX and L^ATEX, XView, and the X window system.
