CONCLUSIONS

Interval velocity estimation algorithms are usually based on either a model driven ray tracing or on an analytic approximation that relates RMS and interval velocities. For the specific case of a horizontally-layered subsurface, it is possible to retrieve the interval velocity from attributes directly measured from the data, without the use of approximations or a priori models. The hybrid scheme described herein successfully estimated the velocities when applied to synthetic and real data. The resolution obtained in the real data example was higher than expected, given the low signal-to-noise ratio of the data. As expected, the errors in the estimations obtained with this method did not increase with depth.
