A possible modeling application of S&M

A constant irritation in computer modeling is that continuous and smooth boundaries between regions have no obvious counterpart in a space-sampled world. S&M may provide a simple solution. Assign an area of influence to each point. Where a region boundary crosses such an area, chose as elastic constants for that point those of the equivalent medium that honors the direction of the boundary, and the relative proportions into which the area is divided.
