Analysis of drill-bit data: preliminary results
, by Clement Kostov and Luigi Zanzi
The concept of an experiment using the drill-bit signal as a downhole seismic source is
presented. The first step in the processing of data from such experiments is to separated
the drill-bit signal from the noise generated by surface sources; then a variety of
applications taking advantage of the source location can be considered. We discuss methods
for the analysis of the temporal and spatial characteristics of drill-noise data; the
application of these methods to field data from a preliminary field survey allow us to
identify strong narrow-band sources of noise at the surface.
