Layered Models, Equivalence, and Abelian Groups , by Francis Muir

The Dix and Backus models are shewn to be equivalent to algebraic groups, which leads to simple computational schemes for manipulating these models and their extensions. These ideas are illustrated by a lithologic modeling example.
