Let f be twice continuously differentiable in a neighborhood of $\bold{x}^*$. Assume that $\nabla f(\bold{x}^*) = 0$ and that $\nabla^2 f(\bold{x}^*)$ is positive definite, then $\bold{x}^*$ is a local minimizer of f.
